Expo LED lighting technology and innovative design applications (Figure)

A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a device that emits visible light or infrared radiation with high efficiency through a forward current in a semiconductor pn junction or the like. LED is another leap in the history of human lighting following incandescent, fluorescent and high-pressure gas discharge lamps. On the technical level, it is a new generation of light source, reflecting the advanced nature of technology; at the artistic level, it has the characteristics of small size, color change, easy control, etc., providing a broad space for creation; on the ecological level, it does not contain mercury. Harmful substances, from the production process to the application are all green and environmentally friendly light sources; on the sustainable level, it has low energy consumption and long life, which is conducive to energy conservation and long-term maintenance. It can be said that the use of semiconductor lighting technology is an important part of the construction of the night scene system of the Expo site with equal emphasis on energy efficiency and landscape art.

At present, semiconductor lighting has become the focus of competition in the field of energy-saving new technologies in various countries. In 2000, the Hannover World Expo in Germany and the 2005 Aichi Expo in Japan have adopted some semiconductor lighting technologies, but the scope and scale of application are very limited. In recent years, LED technology is in a period of rapid development, not only in the field of landscape lighting technology, but also gradually applied in the field of functional lighting. In the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park, a large-scale innovative application of semiconductor lighting, just like the electric lighthouse at the Paris World Expo in 1867, the gas lamp at the 1873 Vienna Expo, and the incandescent lamp at the 1878 Paris World Expo in France, while achieving its lighting function, It has also become an important exhibition project at the World Expo, and will enhance the artistic expression of the night Expo Park as a whole.

First, "One Axis and Four Pavilions" important building semiconductor lighting applications

The Expo Theme Pavilion is located in Area B of the Shanghai World Expo Planning Fence Zone. The building design uses a unit-repeating scheme. The north-south façade is shaped to form the entrance gray space, and the modeling motif of the fold line type is presented; the east-west facade gives the plant wall an ecological energy-saving skin, which will become the green continuation of the Expo city axis. In the lighting design, water curtain projection, solar and semiconductor lighting combination, lighting control and other technologies are used to realize the interaction between the theme building lighting and the surrounding environment.

2. Expo Performance Center

The Expo Performance Center is located in the B01 plot of the Expo Park. The nightscape lighting intentions match the architectural design concept, highlighting the futuristic sense of “space visitors”, focusing on the smooth and smooth shell of the “flying saucer” and the circular window opened on the surface of the shell. As well as the inner lighting effect of the Central Corridor, it creates a landmark image of the landmarks that are full of vitality on the Pujiang River. Its architectural lighting is mainly divided into three parts: upper casing lighting, lower casing lighting and central ring corridor lighting. The lighting window, which is scattered on the surface of the upper shell, is the main element of nighttime performance. In order to enhance the lighting effect, a decorative "circular lighting window" for lighting can be added on the basis of the original. The illumination mode is mainly to illuminate the side wall and the inner wall of the window through the LED linear type floodlight installed in the lower part of the circular window, thereby generating the effect of internal light transmission. The lower case is raised from the middle to the outside, and the LED floodlight placed on the ground is also used to project light from bottom to top.

4. China Pavilion

The appearance of the Chinese pavilion is based on the theme of “Oriental Crown”. The concept of the arches is superimposed by the members, expressing the spirit and temperament of Chinese culture. The Chinese Pavilion uses high-color LED floodlights to illuminate the red main structure in the exterior lighting, fully demonstrating the color of the museum's “China Red”.

5. Expo Axis

The Expo Axis is the main entrance and main axis of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The two floors on the ground floor are semi-open buildings. On the 10-meter platform, there is a large tensioned membrane structure roof and a light-weight steel structure Sun Valley. The lighting design of the Expo Axis mainly represents this part. Using the small size of the LED, the direct-view LED light-emitting point is installed at the intersection of the light-weight steel structure of the Sun Valley, and various images and texts with low resolution are displayed. In addition, in the stretched film portion, the LED is also used for floodlight illumination. The Expo Axis makes full use of the dynamic characteristics of the full spectrum of LEDs to create a festive and festive atmosphere.

1. Performing Arts Center Semiconductor Lamps

The burger light (FLY) series is specially designed for the performing arts center, and the body shape and the performing arts center have a certain echo. The luminaire uses a white LED as a light source to provide uniform and soft illumination distribution and symmetrical light distribution through diffusion of materials. The series of lamps, including the walkway lights and lawn lights, are placed in the outdoor square and lawn of the performing arts center, which exudes unique charm at night.

FLY series

The FLY series of walkway lights use high-power white LEDs as the light source. Designed for the hard squares of the pavilions in the Expo Park. While performing courtyard lighting and walking space lighting, it also has a certain decorative effect and plays a role of visual guidance. In order to reflect the characteristics of the LED light source, the lamp head portion of the walkway lamp is changed into the form of a ball, a hemisphere or a rectangular square of a traditional lamp lamp head, and is designed into a flat rectangular shape and integrated with the lamp post, subverting the appearance form of the traditional walkway lamp. . The luminaire is simple in shape and suitable for modern urban spaces and has been applied in the theme pavilion.

2, semiconductor chandelier

The use of white LEDs in semiconductor chandeliers can create rich lighting effects, making the space full of color and fun, suitable for bars, hotels, restaurants, residential and other environments. The semiconductor lamp is designed with a special light-transmitting material to increase the light transmittance while ensuring the high transmittance of the light, and solves the problem that the brightness of the common surface of the semiconductor lamp is too high, and the glare is well controlled.

3. Innovative design of semiconductor lighting art

In addition to functional lighting, LEDs also have a rich artistic expression. Combine LEDs with a variety of building materials to create creative media works. The Expo Performing Arts Center adopts this design method and presents an artistically pleasing digital media screen on two 3.6x24m walls in the south entrance and west entrance hall. The illuminated digital media screen was participated in the preliminary experimental design by the students of the Art Design Department of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University. It lasted for half a year and was an example of the combination of production, study and research.
