Samsung may launch plastic substrate AMOLED screen within two years

South Korea's etnews reported that Samsung's Samsung mobile display company SMD will develop an AMOLED screen based on plastic substrates within two years, mainly in the field of mobile display.

In fact, the OLED panel is very slim and very flexible. We have some understanding of the previous OLED screen hammering and shearing test. However, plastic substrates can make the AMOLED display of mobile products such as mobile phones and portable media players even more resilient.

In order to realize this technology, Samsung Mobile Display will place the TFT thin film transistor on a plastic substrate and replace the vinyl plastic protective layer on the substrate with a polyimide film to avoid the influence of light transmittance.

Industry experts believe that Samsung Mobile Display's new technology research and development speed exceeded expectations. If mass production starts as scheduled two years later, then Samsung will undoubtedly take the lead in the market and have more say in product pricing.

The application of plastic substrates has become a hot spot in recent times. Hewlett-Packard said in May that the glass display will be eliminated within ten years and designed a military watch based on plastic display for the US military. This month's HP CTO further demonstrated its flexible display and said the screen will be available for use in new Palm products.
