The US Department of Transportation has introduced data transmission for short-distance communication technology between cars up to 300 meters.

In the morning of December 14, the US Department of Transportation proposed on Tuesday that all new cars and trucks would be able to communicate with each other using short-range wireless technology to reduce traffic accidents.

The US Department of Transportation introduces short-range communication technology for inter-vehicle use. Data transmission can be as far as 300 meters.

The US regulator initially proposed the development of this technology in early 2014. After the finalization of the regulations, car manufacturers will have at least 4 years to comply with this requirement. At that time, car manufacturers need to ensure that all vehicles "communicate in the same language through standard technology."

The government of US President-elect Trump will decide when to finalize this request. This rule does not apply to large vehicles such as buses and semi-trailers.

The US Highway Traffic Safety Committee (NHTSA) estimates that communication between vehicles will reduce up to 80% of non-drending traffic accidents, especially at intersections or when vehicles change lanes.

Last year, there were 6.3 million traffic accidents in the United States. In October this year, NHTSA announced that the number of deaths from traffic accidents in the United States increased by 10.4% year-on-year in the first half of the year. In 2015, the number of traffic accident deaths in the United States has risen by 7.2% to 35,092, the highest annual record since 1966.

Inter-vehicle communication will use dedicated short-range communication technology, the data transmission distance can reach up to 300 meters, and the transmitted data includes position, direction and speed. These data will be broadcast to surrounding vehicles at a frequency of 10 times per second, and these vehicles will identify the risks and warn the driver to avoid collisions.

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said: "From a security perspective, this is obvious." NHTSA director Mark Rosekind said that vehicles only exchange safety information to protect User privacy. In addition, this technology will ensure that signals are not blocked by hackers.
