Of course, the Dorkpod looks unique. At least one company would design a balance car like this.
So why do designers do this? The Tinkersmiths Makerspace team stated that it is hoped that the form of the Dorkpod is an interesting, low-cost, low-carbon one that can become an excellent tool for sharing travel. Its shape is designed with reference to retro rockets.
The key parts of Dorkpod include the finished grade plywood and motor at the bottom, and the fuselage part needs to use CNC machine tools and other equipment for precision cutting. If the user wants and has the ability, they can improve on their own.
In fact, the team will open source to the Dorkpod in January 2017, which means that users with the ability and tools can make appropriate changes to the prototype.
Although it may seem slightly comical at the moment, if the Dorkpod can provide a safer and more stable driving experience while promoting cooperation with the community, it would be a good way to share travel.
It is currently crowdfunding on the kickstarter. The open source plan (including CAD drawings, circuit configuration, etc.) is priced at US$25 (approximately RMB170), and the early prototype package price is US$350 (approximately RMB2382). It is expected that Delivery began in January 2017.
