5G iPhone may arrive ahead of schedule and begin testing next year

According to reports, the XMM81605G will support peak speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second, which is 3 to 6 times faster than current state-of-the-art LTE modems. It will launch in the second half of 2019 and will provide the capabilities and experiences to accelerate widespread 5G adoption.
On November 17 last year, Intel launched the first 5G commercial multimode modem (baseband processor) XMM8000 series. The XMM8060 and the subsequent XMM8160 launched during the same period are Intel's commercial 5G multimode modems that support both frequency bands below 6GHz and millimeter wave frequency bands. It supports full 5G non-independent and independent New Radio (NR for short) and multi-mode commercial 5G modems in various 2G, 3G, and 4G traditional modes. These are the two major trends of 5G at present. What Intel wants to do is the "5G full Netcom" chip. It's what Apple's iPhone wants.

Intel's 5G baseband faces competition from Qualcomm, which is currently used by almost every other hardware manufacturer, including Samsung, Nokia/HMD, Sony, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, HTC, LG, Asus, ZTE, Sharp, Fujitsu And OnePlus -- at least 18 phone makers are working with Qualcomm and its Snapdragon X50 5GNR modem.

In any case, there must be a 5G battle between Apple & Intel and Qualcomm, and Huawei and Samsung are also developing their own in-house 5G baseband chips.
