Wolfson today announced the launch of the WM8510 mono codec, the company's first product specifically designed for IP telephony (VoIP) devices and digital telephony. The WM8510 features high-quality audio performance at a low cost. As a low-power, highly integrated device, the WM8510 significantly reduces design costs and external component requirements.The WM8510 includes a speaker or headphone driver, two separate microphone inputs (such as a cell phone and speakerphone) and two dedicated analog audio outputs with volume control. The advanced sigma delta converter combined with digital decimation and interpolation filters provides high quality audio at run rates from 8 to 48 ks/s. Additional digital filtering options are available on the channels of the analog-to-digital converter because of its advanced automatic level control with a noise gate. The chip has an on-chip phase-locked loop that produces a master clock derived from an external reference clock. The phase-locked loop clock can also be output to other parts of the system as needed. The WM8510's standard audio interface supports the input or output of chip audio data. This interface supports a variety of audio data formats, including μ-law and alpha-law, pulse code modulation (PCM), I2S, and digital signal processor modes, as well as master-slave mode.
The WM8510 operates from a supply voltage range of 2.5 volts to 3.6 volts, but to save power, its digital core can operate at a minimum of 1.62 volts. A separate supply voltage of up to 5 volts can be used for the speaker and mono output, which increases output power when needed. Different parts of the chip can be reduced in power by software control via two or three optional online control interfaces.
The WM8510 is available in a 28-pin SSOP package and is priced at $1.25 per unit for 10,000 units.
