New electrostatic discharge protection chip (ST)

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection chip. The new product adds one channel of protection to the four-way competing product, and the same package size provides a space-efficient solution for designers of feature-rich and space-constrained portable devices such as smartphones and netbooks.

The touch screen, side buttons and external interface of the smartphone help users to better use the rich functions of the mobile phone. In order to prevent the electrostatic discharge (ESD) phenomenon from burning the components when the user uses the mobile phone, the designer needs to add internal ESD protection to the mobile phone. The circuit does not sacrifice valuable board space, because new features and functions are always necessary to attract consumers, and designers must reserve more board space for this.

STMicroelectronics' ESDA6V1-5T6 completely solves board space contention problems. The product integrates five data line ESD protection diodes in a 1.0 x 1.0mm package that is currently available on the market's smallest 4-wire product. The 5-wire protection chips are available in larger packages. With the ESDA6V1-5T6, designers can achieve the ESD protection they need with smaller, smaller components. STMicroelectronics also offers a low-capacitance 5-way ESD protection chip, the ESDALC6V1-5T6, to protect high-speed data lines, such as the SIM card, camera or display interface of a mobile phone.

Main features of ESDAxx6V1-5T6:
• 1.0mm x 1.0mm x 0.4mm Micro-DFN package • ESDA6V1-5T6: 34pF capacitor for protection of up to 15MHz data rate • ESDALC6V1-5T6: Capacitance less than 9pF for protection of data rates up to 100MHz • Ultra low leakage Current: 0.1μA at 3V
• 6V breakdown voltage • Meets IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 safety standards:
• 15kV air discharge • 8 kV contact discharge

Both ESDA6V1-5T6 and ESDALC6V1-5T6 are in volume production.
