# The original innovator # NETGEAR NETGEAR R6400 use experience + multi-routing wireless roaming + shared hard disk simple experience

What was worth buying for a long time, I bought a lot of things here, and also tapped a lot of potential shopping needs, so I do not know what to buy in the end is worth saving or is it worth mentioning. But anyway, thank Zhang Aunt.

Recently, I bought a NETGEAR R6400 router and learned a lot of knowledge from Zhang Aunt's website. Therefore, in the spirit of drinking water and not forgetting to dig wells, I also wrote a use experience. Because I am not an IT-related major, my work and IT are far from one another. So I basically belong to Xiaobai who understands a little bit. This article is also written for brothers and sisters who have the same needs and make reference, so the technology has passed by. You can miss it. Of course, if there are any errors in the text, please correct it.

If you have the following needs to be met, then the following article may be a little use:

Reasons to purchase

The router at home starts with Belkin's router, which is this product:

Belkin wireless router wifi dual frequency 600M through the wall King home N600 wired interface smart universal 249 yuan Lynx featured direct link

Buying in 2013, when it was bought, it was 295 yuan, now it is 249 yuan, and it seems to be very preserving. Its practicality is also good, very stable, that is, poor scalability.

Later I felt that a router signal could not be covered. The basic signal of two rooms was very weak (in fact, the house was 140 flat, mainly because of structural problems, more walls, and the location of the wired network port was also awkward, so the signal was not good). With the purchase of a router, fortunately, the developers have the foresight to reserve two wired network ports in the house, so buying a router is also possible, and no need to pull another line or use a wireless bridge. So later I bought a pole routing 1S (we all know, do not put the link), mainly to see ads that more plug-ins, high playability. In fact, after buying it, it tossed it, and finally it didn't play. Basically, it used general routing.

In the second half of 2016, when telecommunications suddenly said that it would pay 20 yuan more per month, it would be possible to refer broadband to 200M from 50M. I thought I had reluctantly agreed. But this way, the router is a little useless, Belkin and the polar routing are 100M routing, 200M broadband is a waste of ah, just right at this time feel the extreme routing is not alright, often feel that will stop the flow (again Zan Belkin router, Very stable), so the idea of buying a new route was born.

Aunt Zhang's website saw a lot of valuable experience sharing, compared to compare, I feel that the R6400 most satisfy my needs: moderate prices, good performance, high playability, you can set up a simple network disk.

Finally in a sunny day, cloudless days, I bought R6400 from K station (know what K station is also worth buying).

Appearance Gallery

Forgive me when I was out of the box. I didn't even think of writing this experience because at that time I didn't know that I would toss it and I wouldn't put a picture on it. So I wouldn't put a picture on it (in fact, it would be lazy). .

Reviews

After I got the R6400, I couldn't wait to brush the Merlin system. As for the native system, I went in once - when I was brushing the system, I think now, it's a little too anxious and I should first "enjoy" the native system. Brush system I refer to the article we used to catch jellyfish (door here: http://post.smzdm.com/p/514788/), thanks to the jellyfish brother, Brush process will not repeat them.

1. After the brush machine, it is a variety of tutorials according to the jellyfish brother, set a bit, you can go online. Plug-in I mainly installed shadowsocks and koolproxy plug-ins.

2. Home networking - Limited bridging, seamless roaming

As mentioned earlier, my home originally had two routers, but the routers were directly connected to the cat. The consequence of this is that there are two networks in the home (Route 1 and Route 2 are different networks respectively), and manual switching is required. As shown below:

Routers are connected to broadband cats

R6400 replaced polar routing after hand. My original idea is that the R6400 signal is good enough, then it doesn't need to use two routers, but it turns out I was wrong and the R6400 signal is better than the original router, but after wearing 3 walls, Also decayed poorly.

Suddenly I think of the company's network is also on each floor, but never switch, check a lot of information on the Internet before they know that this is called seamless roaming (the helpless white technology, there is no known off-the-shelf technology). There are two kinds of seamless roaming - WDS and wired bridge, the principle is similar, but WDS is a wireless bridged wireless, wired bridge is the name suggests. However, the signal of the wireless bridge itself is not stable, and the signal received by the sub-route is attenuated through the wireless bridge. Therefore, the bandwidth after the bridge must have a considerable loss, and the two network ports in the home should be able to use wired bridges. After doing a night of research, we finally got it, as shown below:

The main route wired bridges two secondary routes The main route wired bridges two secondary routes

In this network, the home signal is good enough. The kitchen signal is the weakest, but WiFi is not used in the kitchen. Therefore, it doesn't matter. The main route uses R6400 and the secondary route is the original Belkin and polar route. Here are the setup steps:

(1) The main route is connected to a broadband cat. Normal settings, such as entering a broadband account password and the like, can access the Internet. Look at the IP of the main route, which is usually 192.168.1.1, but I have two cats before. The router, assigned to the R6400, is 192.168.2.1. It has not been changed since then, so it has been used. It has no effect.

(2) The focus is on the setting of secondary routes:

a. The Lan port of the main route is connected to the Lan port of the secondary route (this is very important, because I started to connect to the Wan port of the secondary route.

b. Turn off the DHCP for the secondary routes (the settings for different routers are not the same, so I can only set myself as an example);

Pole routing to turn off DHCP settings

c. Set the IP address of the secondary route. This IP address must be within the IP address range of the primary route, the primary route is 192.168.1.1, and the secondary route is set to 192.168.1.X (X is in the range of 2-254). However, the IP of each secondary route cannot be duplicated. For example, secondary route 1 is 192.168.1.2, secondary route 2 is 192.168.1.3, and so on. My main route's IP is 192.168.2.1, so the sub-routes's addresses are 192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.3. (Each router's configuration interface is different, so I can only set myself as an example)

Set LAN port IP (subroute 1)

Set Lan port IP (sub route 2)

4. Modify the wireless network name and password. The SSID of the main route and the sub route must be the same. The password must be the same and the channel must be different (to avoid mutual interference, set the channel for my 2.4G network to be 6/1/11 respectively). 2.4G And 5G network is a principle.

After setting this up, you can basically implement wired bridging and wireless roaming. If you need to log in to the router background, enter the router's respective IP, such as mine is 192.168.2.1 (host route -R6400), 192.168.2.2 (sub-route - Belkin routing), 192.168.2.3 (sub-route - pole route) .

3. Remotely set the router and shared hard disk settings

About setting up the router remotely and remotely accessing the hard disk, I learned from the K station, mainly refer to this article http://koolshare.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=9509&page=1&authorid=15016 interested classmates For reference, I simply put my settings down.

(1) Setting of external network access router

To set up DDNS, the server I use is ASUS, but of course you can use other servers like the reference tutorial above. Give the host a name that is equivalent to the router's domain name.

After setting up the DDNS, you need to set the next port. The system default seems to be 8443. I modified it to 9999.

After setting up, you can remotely enter the router background. The address is https://xxxx (personalized name set in the DDNS interface).asuscomm.com:9999. Pictured:

(2) Shared hard disk settings

The R6400 is designed to support the mounting of an external hard disk. There is a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 interface (connecting the hard disk directly to the router's USB port). I happen to have a hard drive idle and hang up. There are two ways to access the hard disk. The first is the network share (samba). This way you can access the hard disk in the network neighbor. The second type is FTP access, which can be accessed on the intranet and the Internet.

Samba settings

FTP access needs to be set in the FTP settings interface, allowing anonymous login not to open (unless you want to share data to the world), as shown:

FTP settings

If you want to access the hard disk via FTP on the external network, there is a most important prerequisite - there is a public IP, many operators are assigned to the user's internal network IP, such as 192 or 10 or 100 IP, are On the intranet IP, my IP is also the beginning of the 100, and later call to change to the public network IP, now is the IP beginning 112, as shown in the figure can view their own IP.

IP viewing

If you set it up, you can access the shared hard disk through the internal and external network, which is equivalent to your own network disk. Now the only risk is that if the hard disk is hung up, the data will be lost. The internal network access address is the IP of the router. My 192.168.2.1, the external network access address is the host name set in the DDNS, my external network FTP access as shown:

Remote access to shared hard disks via FTP

to sum up

In general, the R6400 is an entry-level router with high playability that can meet the basic needs of the average home. At this price, the price/performance ratio is still very high. If there is higher demand or not bad money, you can go directly to a higher-level router.

In 2017, I set myself a small goal, buy a higher-end router (at least AC88U), and then assign a big house to a high-end router.

The above is the process of tossing the R6400. In general, it is relatively simple for the masters, and for a small white like me, it still requires a lot of exploration. I hope my little experience can be used as a reference for the valued friends.
